Students gain insights into journalism
About 35 students attended a journalism symposium on the SMC South Portland Campus to help them gain new skills and insights into the journalism field.
The conference, held Oct. 7 at the McKernan Center, drew students from SMCC as well as from the University of Southern Maine and the Maine 天美传媒 of Art.
Students attended break-out sessions that focused on topics that included social media marketing, turning statistics into stories, story construction, illustrating for newspapers, photojournalism, journalistic narratives and typography for newspapers.
Featured speakers included Dieter Bradbury of the Portland Press Herald, Jake Bleiberg of the Bangor Daily News, former journalists and SMCC faculty and students.
The event was organized by SMCC faculty Chuck Ott and Rachel Guthrie, who serve as faculty advisers to The Beacon student newspaper.
